Redistricting

Every 10 years following the U.S. Census, municipalities and special-purpose districts in Washington state are required to review their voting districts to help ensure fair and equitable elected representation. Population growth and shifts within the Port’s five commissioner districts means that population in some districts has changed and boundaries may need to be shifted to rebalance population for elected representation.

The Port of Anacortes will hold a Special Commission Meeting on Thursday, December 9, 2021 at 6:00pm to discuss redistricting. For location and virtual attendance options click here.

A Public Hearing will be held on Thursday December 16, 2021 at 7:00pm to hear public comment. For location and virtual attendance options click here.

Redistricting is the process of changing boundaries of voting districts so that all districts serve an equal number of citizens. As states and communities grow and change, people’s representation in government begins to get out of balance. Redistricting brings these numbers back into balance to ensure every member of the district is represented fairly.
