 Port of Anacortes Commission authorizes employment agreement with Brett Greenwood as new Executive Director

ANACORTES, WA – The Port of Anacortes Board of Commissioners voted unanimously during a regularly scheduled Commission meeting on June 6 to authorize the execution of an employment agreement with Brett Greenwood, officially installing him as Executive Director.

Mr. Greenwood’s anticipated start date is Aug. 1, 2024. His employment agreement includes an annual salary of $225,000 and reimbursement of up to $3,000 for expenses related to moving within the Port’s geographic boundary.

“We’re excited to welcome Mr. Greenwood as the Port of Anacortes’ new Executive Director,” said Commission President Jon Ronngren. “His strong leadership skills and experience will be a huge asset for the Port and our community, and we look forward to hitting the ground running when he comes on board this summer.”

Starting his career in the US Coast Guard, Mr. Greenwood transitioned to school district administration to focus on raising his family. He has honed his leadership skills over the last 20 years as his career grew with the Ferndale and Bellingham school districts. Mr. Greenwood currently serves as the Executive Director of Business, Operations and Technology with the Sedro-Woolley School District, where he has been for the last 12 years. In that position, he has oversight of the budget, staffing, operations, real estate, legal matters, security, capital projects, and long-term planning.

Mr. Greenwood holds a Master’s in Organizational/Business Leadership from Gonzaga University. He actively participates in local Rotary and Lions clubs and has enjoyed collaboration with local public and business organizations.

Recruitment background
In late January the Port of Anacortes Board of Commissioners directed staff to establish a robust recruitment process that would identify top-tier candidates with the necessary qualifications. These qualifications included dynamic leadership, relationship building, and strategic thinking.

The Port hired Turner HR Services in February to assist with a thoughtful and thorough nationwide recruitment for its next Executive Director. Recruitment opened March 15 and the Port received more than 65 applications. Port senior staff and Turner HR performed screening interviews in April. Through two in-depth rounds of screening, they narrowed the field to two candidates. Both candidates participated in a comprehensive on-site interview process May 7 and 8, which included:

  • A reception with Port business partners, including the Marina Advisory Committee, marine trades and Port tenants
  • A public open house with over 50 community members in attendance
  • Panel interviews with Port partners, including the Chamber of Commerce, City of Anacortes Mayor, EDASC, ILWU and Northwest Marine Trades Association
  • A Port tour with senior leadership
  • An all-staff luncheon and Q&A
  • Interviews with the Commission

The Port solicited feedback from all groups involved in the selection process. This input was reviewed by the Commission in public session on May 9, and the Commission voted unanimously during a Special Public Meeting May 13 to select Mr. Greenwood as the Port’s next Executive Director.
