The Port of Anacortes is replacing the lighting system on Anacortes Airport’s primary runway, Runway 18-36, to enhance safety and reliability. Construction will occur in multiple phases that will include shortened runway conditions and periodic closures. A detailed schedule is provided in the table below. The work is expected to take 40 working days, with construction scheduled to begin on Jan. 27 and conclude by the end of March 2026.

This schedule shows the anticipated construction phasing and runway impacts. The project schedule is subject to change, and any updates will be communicated.

The graphic above shows an example of partial runway closures during construction.
Approved by the Port Commission on April 17, 2025, the project includes removal of existing runway markings, trenching, conduit installation, and electrical upgrades along the runway and adjacent safety areas. The Federal Aviation Administration is funding the majority of project costs, covering 90% of Phase 1 costs and 95% of Phase 2 costs.
The Anacortes Airport is a vital asset to the community and regional economy. The airport offers hangars, runways, tie-downs, and fuel for local and visiting aviators while supporting emergency medical evacuations, search and rescue operations, business and recreational travel, and access to remote areas. These runway lighting improvements will help the Port continue operating Anacortes Airport safely and efficiently, supporting residents and the local businesses that rely on the airport.
The Port appreciates the flexibility and cooperation of airport tenants and users during the construction. For questions about this project, please contact Sawyer Sponholz (sawyer.sponholz@portofanacortes.com).
