Starting Monday, Oct. 16, the North Basin parking lot at Cap Sante Marina will close for construction. This closure is expected to last three weeks while crews work to complete surface replacement, curb repair, and restriping. The Port will be offering a temporary courtesy van service starting Oct. 16 for customers and guests from 8am – 10pm during this period. This service will provide transportation from the West Basin to the North Basin Building and PQ Pier. If you would like to use this courtesy van service, please call (360) 661-0662, and either our Outside Operations or Security teams will respond immediately.
This construction is part of the larger North Basin Redevelopment Project, which kicked off in July and has progressed steadily throughout the summer and fall. This project includes four phases of work: the RV Park, RV Park restrooms, JKL parking lot, and asphalt overlay for the North Basin parking lot.
Overseeing this redevelopment project is Port of Anacortes Project Manager Jenkins Dossen. He emphasized that these updates are much needed for the area, noting that the RV park had aging infrastructure and previously sat as a gravel lot with no utility hookups. Additionally, the North Basin parking lot, which was constructed in 1984, was in need of a refresh.
The end result of this project will be a brand-new RV Park with 25 stalls, full hookups, and a dedicated restroom facility. The JKL parking lot will have new asphalt and expanded parking capacity that can accommodate 130+ vehicles, and the North Basin parking lot will receive a new asphalt overlay. Additionally, the area will boast enhanced public and pedestrian access with new sidewalks and crosswalks along Market Street. “At the end of the day, this will be a huge improvement for public facilities,” Dossen said.
Tiger Construction, the general contractor for this project, has been making good progress on the construction site. After the groundbreaking in July, they mobilized to the site and began working on the rock wall along Market Street. They then transition to earth work, conducting cut and fill of the area, and will begin excavation of the new dedicated RV restroom facilities.
Work on the North Basin parking lot will be wrapped up this fall so that it can be returned to marina use. Construction on the RV Park, restrooms, and JKL parking lot are scheduled to be completed in Spring 2024.
Summer and fall are critical seasons to complete much of the earth work and excavation and to get utility, storm, sewer, water, and electrical in the ground. It’s essential to complete this work when the weather is dry and before the cold and rainy season comes.
To carry out this work, the Port of Anacortes and Tiger Construction are working closely with the City of Anacortes for road closures as needed. So far, Market Street was closed for four weeks beginning in July, and additional closures are anticipated throughout the span of the project.
“We really appreciate our permanent moorage customers, tenants, and the public who are working with us during this construction to build this new and improved facility,” Dossen shared.
We ask that you continue to look for signs around the project area and the Port’s website for the most up to date information regarding current and upcoming closures. Thank you for your patience as we continue to invest in and improve public facilities in Anacortes!
