Meet Commissioner Bob Papadakis

Commissioner Term Start Date: January 2026

District: District 2

Why did you run for Commissioner?

In a word, service. Service has been a core component of my personal makeup ever since I can remember. It is what drove me to pursue a career in the Navy, and it is also why I have volunteered in various roles for many years.

I also believe the Port of Anacortes is the economic engine that drives this community. I wanted to be part of the team that supports the many businesses that are part of that. We face many important decisions as we enter 2026 – the year of the Port’s 100th Anniversary. I am excited to be part of the Commission at this very important time.

What about the Port of Anacortes’ mission is most important to you?

All of it. The Port’s mission statement covers the elements that our constituents expect us to focus on as a commission:

“In partnership with public agencies and private business …” We are partners, and as a Washington state port, are in a unique position to work with the public and private sectors to create jobs and expand commerce in our community.

“… develop and manage facilities and services which stimulate private job creation and commerce, while protecting the quality of life, needs and desires of area residents.”

We function in a supporting role to provide the infrastructure and services necessary to stimulate the community’s economy, always with a focus on protecting the quality of life of our citizens. Being a good steward of the environment is a perfect example here. Additionally, the needs and desires of area residents is a key element of this part of our mission. What does the community want the Port to do to support them?

What are the most important issues facing the Port and our community right now?

Operating in a constrained fiscal environment. Bulk export revenues at the Port are down and the Washington state budget will experience serious challenges in 2026. We are very fortunate to have an outstanding financial team at the Port of Anacortes that has a proactive approach to these challenges, and I look forward to working with them as we navigate these difficult waters.

Cap Sante’s West Basin. I wouldn’t call this an issue, but rather an exciting opportunity. Chances are, if you ask anyone about Port business right now, this topic is sure to come up. There are multiple elements to this portion of the Port’s Capital Improvement Plan, but the Event Facility has received the most focus. I look forward to being part of the Port leadership and discussion as we keep communication lines open with the community on this very important Port-City endeavor.

What is the best part of being a Port Commissioner?

First, the opportunity to represent my constituents who have placed their trust in me to do my best on their behalf in this position. Secondly, it is the opportunity to work in the environment of my two passions: maritime and aviation. I have been immersed in both my entire adult life.

What is your favorite thing about Anacortes?

The people. Like many who have chosen to make this their home, we were a Navy family that chose Anacortes initially because of its school system and wonderful environment. The citizens of Anacortes did not treat us as transients, but instead embraced us and made us a part of this special place. We did everything possible to return here after our Navy service was complete, and we were blessed to do so.

What is the one thing about you that would surprise people?

I am an introvert by the classic definition. I work well in large groups and fast-paced environments, but recharge “my social battery” in a more subdued way. Reading is one of my favorite pastimes.

What motivates you to work hard?

My personal work ethic motivates me to work hard. I always strive to do the best job possible. I look forward to working alongside my fellow commissioners on behalf of the citizens of our community.
