Four months, 710,000 lbs. of carbon saved
In late March 2021 the Port of Anacortes switched to 100% renewable power for all our operations. Puget Sound Energy (PSE) has a Green Power Program through which homeowners and organizations can purchase energy that’s generated through a mix of renewable sources, mainly solar, wind, and biogas. The Port now purchases all our electricity through the Green Power Program, and while it does cost a bit more, it significantly reduces our carbon footprint and encourages us to be more energy efficient.
In the first four months of the program alone, we’d already reduced our carbon footprint by 710,000 pounds. PSE estimates that the program will reduce the Port’s annual carbon footprint by around 3 million pounds a year, which is roughly equivalent to 270 Washington state households switching to green energy.
“This was an easy choice for the Port to make,” said Port environmental specialist Kevin Anderson. “It’s an ongoing commitment and just more one step toward improving our overall environmental footprint.”
The Port of Anacortes protects and enhances the natural environment through a proactive environmental program of prevention, remediation, and education. We participate in many elective programs to protect the environment around the Port and our community, including Clean Marina Washington, Green Marine, Low Impact Development, and more.
